J&K Assembly Record polling
Jammu and Kashmir today registered a record 71.28 percent turnout in the first phase of incident-free Assembly elections when people ignored boycott calls by separatists and cold conditions to cast their votes in 15 constituencies. In J&K, a 61.23 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the 2008 Assembly polls for these 15 seats–6 in Jammu division, 5 in Kashmir Valley and four in Ladakh.
Today’s polling was spread over seven districts. The overall turnout in the state in the Assembly elections in 1996 and 2012 was 53.92 per cent and 43.69 per cent respectively. Disclosing this at a press conference here today the Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. Umang Narula said 77% votes were cast in 9-Gurez, 70% in 10-Bandipora, 80% in 11-Sonawari, 76% in 16-Kangan, 53 % in 17-Ganderbal, 75.6% in 47-Nobra, 66% in 48-Leh, 60% in 49-Kargil, 71% in 50-Zanskar, 68.83% in 51-Kishtwar, 72.54% in 52-Inderwal, 79% in 53-Doda, 70% in 54-Bhaderwah, 68% in 55-Ramban (SC) and 70% in 56-Banihal. He said the polling percentage may increase as details are awaited from some remote areas.
