Srinagar recorded season’s coldest night.

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital, Srinagar, recorded the coldest night of the season so far as the minimum temperature dropped to 0.2 degrees Celsius on Friday. The chill intensified across the Valley, with temperatures in Gulmarg and Pahalgam plunging below the freezing point.

According to the Meteorological (MeT) Department, Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.6°C and Pahalgam minus 3°C. Officials said the recent snowfall in the surrounding mountains and the forecast of clear skies over the next 10 days are likely to cause a further dip in night temperatures across Kashmir.

With the mercury dipping, residents have started relying on woollens and the traditional Kangri—a small earthen pot filled with hot embers and encased in wicker—to keep warm. Locals have also pulled out their Pherans, the traditional tweed overgarments, along with woollen sweaters, mufflers, and caps to beat the chill.

Although a weak autumn sun offers brief relief during the day, icy winds sweeping down from snow-covered mountains have reduced its warming effect.

The Valley is now bracing for the onset of ‘Chillai Kalan’, the harshest 40-day period of winter that begins on December 21 and ends on January 30. During this time, water bodies partially freeze, roads turn slippery, and frozen water taps force residents to thaw them using small fires in the mornings.

Elsewhere in the region, Jammu recorded a minimum of 11.6°C, while Katra settled at 12.1°C, Batote at 6.1°C, Banihal at 8.8°C, and Bhaderwah at 4.5°C.
