UPSC Indian Economic Service (IES)/ Indian Statistical Service (ISS) Exam 2024: Key Details

Exam Overview

The UPSC Indian Economic Service (IES) and Indian Statistical Service (ISS) exams are conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). These exams are for recruiting eligible candidates into economic and statistical services of the Indian government, working across ministries and various organizations.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Nationality:
    • Must be a citizen of India, or
    • A subject of Nepal, Bhutan, or
    • A refugee of Tibetan origin who came to India before January 1, 1962.
  2. Educational Qualification:
    • For IES: Candidates must have a Postgraduate Degree in Economics, Applied Economics, Business Economics, or Econometrics from a recognized university.
    • For ISS: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree with Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics or a Master’s Degree in Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics from a recognized university.
  3. Age Limit:
    • The candidate must be between 21 and 30 years as of August 1, 2024. Age relaxations apply for reserved categories.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the official UPSC website (upsc.gov.in).
  2. Look for the IES/ISS exam notification under the “Examinations” tab.
  3. Register through the One Time Registration (OTR) system.
  4. Fill out the application form with required details such as educational background, personal details, and upload necessary documents.
  5. Pay the application fee (online/offline).
    • Application fee: INR 200 (No fee for SC/ST/PH/Female candidates).

  • Release of Notification: April 2024
  • Start of Application Process: April 2024
  • Last Date to Apply: May 2024
  • Date of Examination: June 2024
  • Admit Card Release: Two weeks before the exam

Exam Pattern

  1. Indian Economic Service (IES):
    • Consists of six papers: General English, General Studies, and four Economics-related papers.
    • Total marks: 1000 (Written exam: 800 marks, Interview: 200 marks).
  2. Indian Statistical Service (ISS):
    • Consists of six papers: General English, General Studies, and four Statistics-related papers.
    • Total marks: 1000 (Written exam: 800 marks, Interview: 200 marks).
