MLA, Tangmarg, Muhammad Abbas Wani, on Thursday inaugurated the 12th edition of national ice- skating championship at ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir.
In the event around 150 players representing 17 teams from across the country are participating.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Tangmarg who has himself remained a top skier of the State said that more such events should be held in Gulmarg throughout the season so that resort remains abuzz with activities. “ Gulmarg is crown of winter sports in the state. More such events should be held here. It’s good to see season starting on a positive note,” Wani said.
“ This is the first event holistically dedicated to ice- skating, otherwise such events were combined with winter sports event, ” said Director Tourism, Kashmir Mahmood Shah.
“ There are around 150 players taking part in the event but the most interesting fact is that there are around 300 parents along with the players. They all have booked hotels in Gulmarg on their own and that is big surplus point of this event. It will help us in giving boost to the Tourism,” Shah said.
President Ice Skating Association of India RK Gupta on the occasion said that Ice Skating Association of India is serious in develop ice skating in JK. “ We know there is lot f potential in ice- skating in JK. Apart from Gulmarg, Ladakh is best place to hold this kind of event. In the past we used to have lot of players from that area but from last couple of years their number has declined,” he said.
“ We are trying to make a base for ice skating strong in JK and for that we regularly keep sending our coaches here to train youngsters,” Gupta said.
