Around 6,000 Gazetted, Non-Gazetted Posts in J&K health Department

As of May 29, 2023, there are approximately 6,000 vacant gazetted and non-gazetted posts in the health department of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Out of these vacancies, around 2,700 are in the Kashmir division, while the remaining 3,200 are in the Jammu division.

The status report reveals the specific details of vacancies in both divisions. In the Jammu division, there are a total of 1,390 sanctioned posts for medical officers across all ten districts. Out of these, 726 positions have been filled, leaving 664 positions vacant. Additionally, for non-gazetted and Class IV Employees in the Jammu division, there is a sanctioned strength of 6,868 posts. However, only 4,379 positions are occupied, and 2,489 positions remain vacant.

In contrast, the situation is relatively better in the Kashmir division. There are 1,395 filled posts of medical officers out of the total 1,467 sanctioned positions, with only 72 vacancies. Regarding non-gazetted and Class IV Employees in the Kashmir division, there is a sanctioned strength of 8,628 posts, of which 5,976 positions are occupied, and 2,651 positions are vacant.

The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, comprising Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice MA Chowdhary, has taken note of this concerning situation and directed the J&K administration to provide information on the steps taken to fill up the vacant posts of medical officers and non-gazetted employees in the health department across Jammu & Kashmir. The court’s directive specifically calls for details on actions taken in the far-flung areas of districts like Reasi, Poonch, Ramban, Kupwara, Baramulla, etc., where the number of vacancies seems to be significant.

The authorities have been ordered to submit an affidavit indicating the measures they have taken to address the large number of vacancies. The deadline set by the court for filing the response in the form of an affidavit is August 28
